This is a press release shared by the Karapatan Alliance for the Advancement of People’s Rights

The recent move of International Criminal Court (ICC) prosecutor Fatou Bensouda to seek ICC authorization to conduct an investigation on President Rodrigo Duterte’s crime against humanity of murder has raised hopes of making Duterte and his officials accountable for the drug war killings.

Exactly what does the communication against Duterte allege and why is an investigation by the ICC Prosecutor in order? What are the next steps for the ICC? What role do human rights advocates, social movements, and civil society organizations play in ensuring that Duterte is prosecuted and punished?

To answer these and other questions, Movement Against Tyranny, Rappler’s MovePH, Rise Up for Life and Rights, Free Leila de Lima Movement, and Karapatan Alliance for the Advancement of People’s Rights are holding a webinar entitled “Duterte’s Crime against Humanity: Rendering justice through the ICC” on Monday, June 28 at 1 pm Manila time via Zoom.

The topics and invited panelists are:

  • “People of the World vs. Duterte: the crime against humanity of murder” – NUPL Chairperson Neri Colmenares
  • “How can the ICC make Duterte accountable for his crime?” – former UP Law Dean Pacifico Agabin
  • “The failure of the Philippine justice system to prosecute Duterte” – former justice secretary and CHR chairperson Sen. Leila de Lima.
  • “What this case means for the victims of Duterte’s drug war” – Llore Pasco Benidicto, Rise Up for Life and Rights
