MANILA, Philippines – Can Metro Manila be a startup city? Can the country’s capital become an innovation center, attractive to new entrepreneurs?
In this episode of Be The Good: Let’s Talk Liveability, we put the spotlight on a new government and private sector initiative meant to improve the startup landscape in Metro Manila: Strategic and Collaborative Alliance for Leveraging Ecosystems of Startups-National Capital Region (SCALE NCR).
Rappler head of community Pia Ranada speaks to Jay Fajardo, executive director of QBO Innovation, a startup accelerator who was among the founders of SCALE NCR.
SCALE NCR is a consortium created by the Department of Science and Technology and various private sector groups like QBO Innovation and De La Salle Animo Labs.
It aims to improve Metro Manila’s standing in the global startup ecosystem ranking.
One of its initiatives is to map out all of Metro Manila’s 16 cities and one town in terms of opportunities and support for startups. The mapping project will then help in the creation of a five-year “Startup Development Roadmap” for the capital region, according to a press release.
In this Be The Good episode, Fajardo and Ranada talk about the state of the startup ecosystem in Metro Manila, the challenges facing new entrepreneurs and innovators, and what government support is needed to make the megacity more attractive to investors and new businesses.
Can Metro Manila be a center of innovation? How can other Philippine cities become more attractive to startups? Will all these efforts help fuel urban prosperity felt by all?
