Alyansang Tapat sa Lasallista (TAPAT) will to launch at 3 pm on Saturday, May 8, “Sulyap: Pagmulat sa Katotohanan,” a webinar that aims to encourage its participants to contribute to the welfare of the urban poor.
Sulyap primarily aims to tackle urban poverty and key actors’ response to the issue, and to halt the spread of misconceptions surrounding poor communities.
Urban poverty is becoming more normal, with people often forgetting how dire the situation of the poor is. This inspired TAPAT to examine the situation of urban poor communities and recognize the actions needed to offer sustainable and proper initiatives to the sector through Sulyap.
“What made us start the project in the first place was the noticeable and alarming normalization of poverty,” Sulyap project heads Angel Sano and Rai Gernandiso said. “We realized that we needed to act upon this situation and contribute everything that we can,” they added.
Sulyap will feature the following guest speakers:
- Leni Robredo, Vice President of the Philippines
- Dr. Mary Racelis, renowned research scientist and former director of the Institute of Philippine Culture
- Professor Venarica Papa, assistant professor at the UP College of Social Work and Community Development
- Zena Bernardo, social development worker and co-initiator of the #BabaeAko movement and Bayanihang Marikenyo at Marikenya
The organization wants to change the common misperception that people are poor because they don’t work hard enough or just rely on others. It also wants Sulyap to educate people of all ages about the importance of raising awareness about marginalized communities, particularly the struggles that they face.
“As youth leaders, we want to make a change, even if it is small. After all, we can always count on the butterfly effect,” the project heads said.
